Reading comprehension:
Getting together with people you get on with and chatting while eating and drinking really is fun. One day something like this happened: while everyone was gathered cooking, one person peeled a tomato and began arranging it on a plate. Immediately, someone else said “Hey, you don’t peel tomatoes”. As they said this, that person was peeling a cucumber with a knife. “Oh, at my house we don’t peel cucumbers”, said the person who had peeled the tomato. After that, for a while, everyone started talking about peeling or not peeling, which was right and which was wrong, and the cooking came to a complete halt. In the end, one person said “even little things like this are so different, aren’t they”, and the commotion ended.
It is only natural to find it a bit strange when a way of cooking or eating differs from what you have done up to now, but if you think carefully about why, it is mostly just because you are not used to it. Even if you think it is strange at first, when you try eating it, it is often tastier than you expected.
When I asked people who often travel around the world how they make friends with local people, the answer came back :”It does not matter if you babble like a child, just talk to them in their language and eat and drink your fill together.”. The world is vast, so there are people who peel tomatoes and people who do not. Whether you leave the peel on or not is not the issue; what matters more is gathering round a table and eating, drinking and laughing together. Do that, and even without any special effort you can become good friends, can’t you.
