Reading comprehension:
The trains we use every day really are like a good classroom for learning about Japanese people. When I first came to Japan, I could not understand how people put up with the crowded morning and evening trains, and I was amazed to see company employees dozing on the train, smelling of alcohol.

Recently, two young mothers with smart make-up got on the train with several children of about 3 or 4. The kids shouted “here, here” as they grabbed seats, took off their shoes and immediately jumped on the seats and started making a racket. The two mothers occasionally said “Stop it” or “Hey, don’t do that, sit still”, but did not seem to really make them stop, and kept chatting away. Whenever the kids got too noisy, they took sweets and juice out of their bags and gave them. The children were only quiet for a moment while eating and drinking, and afterwards cans and sweet wrappers were thrown everywhere. The two mothers just kept on chatting. Along the way an elderly person carrying bulky luggage got on, yet they had no intention at all of giving up their seats, which really amazed me.

Among young mothers in Japan, there are also mothers who are like children themselves. Before coming to Japan I had heard that Japanese people are kind and very well-mannered, but is that really so? Because I love Japan, whenever I see children being brought up by mothers like these, I start to worry.
