Reading comprehension:
The other day I was walking down the street when suddenly someone spoke to me: “Could you help by answering a questionnaire?”. With a bright face, the person asked me: ” Are you happy at the moment? What is your purpose in life?”, and I could only mumble without ever managing an answer.
What is called a purpose in life is, in short, the meaning of life, isn’t it? Lately I have been chased by work from morning to night, and on days off it is entertaining clients, playing golf with them, being made to help my boss move house, so there is little time with my family and almost no time to think about myself, and just then “Bang!” I was hit with the question “what is your purpose in life?” and was completely at a loss.

From about 15 until my twenties, I was crazy about the guitar, so I thought music was my purpose in life. When I was going out with my wife Noriko, all I thought about was her, and when I started working at the company, even though everyone called me a “worker bee”, I believed it was my calling and always threw myself into work. When my daughter Sachiko was born, I thought she was so adorable that ” she was the apple of my eye”, and I never thought about things like a “purpose in life”. And then, suddenly asked an unexpected question on a street corner, I could only stay silent.

They say you only live once; how do you want to live, are you happy now, what is your purpose in life? I have a copy of the questionnaire I answered. Try filling it in once. And then let’s think together about what life is and what a purpose in life is.
