Reading comprehension:
One day, out of the blue, there was a phone call :”Excuse me, your daughter turns 20 next year, doesn’t she? Has your family prepared a kimono for the coming-of-age ceremony?” Indeed, my daughter turns 20 next January, but this was a shop we had never once visited and whose name we had never even heard; yet the shop’s staff knew in detail her name, age and date of birth, even the name of the school she attends. How could something like that happen? I really could not understand it.
At the time I thought it was just someone trying to sell a kimono, but as time went by, somehow I felt more and more uneasy. I hear my daughter’s friends’ families also got lots of annoying calls like that. If you think about it carefully, it is frightening. I hear there are companies buying and selling information. Could companies like that have got hold of the information they need from staff lists and student lists? Getting information over the phone is another method that comes to mind.
I have had an experience like this too. One day there was a phone call saying :” Please help us by answering a survey about the layout of your home”, and I was asked all sorts of things such as the number of people in the household, their ages, the size of the house, the layout of the rooms, whether there was carpet, its colour, and so on… I believed what they said, that it was so a big electrical appliance maker could improve its vacuum cleaners, and answered honestly. But if someone wanted to use the answers to questions like these, they could be exploited as excellent information. Somewhere, people’s information is being collected through casual-seeming questions and careless answers. If this information is held by strangers for some purpose, perhaps we should not be indifferent?
Nowadays everyone uses the Internet, and by visiting websites you can get and exchange information easily. However, the more telecommunications technology develops, the harder it becomes to manage information. If personal information were only used to make money, that might be forgivable, but property, beliefs, family registers, religion and even genetic information being known and managed by strangers, and should they ever use it for bad purposes, that would be truly frightening. Isn’t now the time for each of us to think about how to protect our personal information?
