This is a story from long ago.
In a small village there lived a very diligent and sincere boy. He was born into a poor family, but he never felt ashamed of his circumstances, was never envious, and instead cared about others.
Every morning he put his hands together and prayed in the sunlight; during the day he worked in the fields, and now and then he helped out in the neighbours’ fields.

- 詰める:つめる:to pack, to fill
In the evening he helped his mother weave and put his hands together in thanks to the stars.
In a life like that, he used every spare moment, as brief as threading a needle, to study.
His book was a discarded language book, half of which could no longer be read.
On festival days he packed the cloth into a basket and went to the next town to sell it. What he earned was a trifling sum. Even so, it was enough to buy a book.
But he brought every last coin home.

- 十二歳:じゅうにさい:twelve years old

If someone was in trouble, he would lend a hand even if he was poorer still. Though he was deceived many times because of his kindness, he forgave without any resentment. But however sincere he was, the world did not smile on him. In his twelfth year, something like this happened. That day he went out to the fields as usual. Then, from the dazzling sun above his head, he heard a voice.
“You are truly wonderful”
At last, heaven had found him.

“I do not see anyone; who is speaking to me?”
“I am the one you put your hands together and pray to every day”
When he heard this, the boy bowed down with his head to the ground
“Raise your head. All this time I have been watching what you do”
“It is most noble”

“You have endured much hardship. So I will give you a reward”
As heaven said this, a sprout shot up from the ground before his eyes, and in the blink of an eye it became a tall tree bearing a red fruit.
“This is the fruit of wisdom. When you eat it, you will gain wisdom you could never have attained in your lifetime. But however much knowledge you gain, you will still walk the path of righteousness, will you not? With that power, lead this world towards better things”

- 頬張る:ほおばる:to stuff one’s mouth
- 唱える:となえる:to chant, to advocate
The boy bowed deeply and picked the fruit of wisdom.
Then the tree quickly withered, collapsed and melted away into the soil.
And he could no longer hear heaven’s voice.
The boy said his thanks, and just as he was about to put the fruit of wisdom into his mouth he noticed an old man collapsed on the footpath beside the field.
Forgetting all about eating the fruit, he ran to the old man.
He seemed to be a traveller who had grown tired and collapsed there.
“Here, please eat this fruit”
- 漲る:みなぎる: to overflow, to brim
Without hesitation he split the fruit of wisdom in two and gave the old man half to eat.
And what happened next? In no time the old man grew stronger and bowed his head in thanks.
“Thank you, you truly are a kind boy. This really is a special fruit. You would do better to plant the other half in your field”
With that, the old man strode off, full of health and vigour.
The boy wondered whether he should eat the remaining half of the fruit of wisdom, but in the end he decided to follow the old man’s advice.
- 瞬く間に:またたくまに:in the blink of an eye
- 驚く:おどろく:to be surprised
He laid the half fruit on the field and covered it with soil, and though he did not water it, it sprouted in the blink of an eye and in a flash became a tree.
It was half the size of the earlier tree.
What grew on the tree was not the red fruit of wisdom but seven thick books.
The boy was astonished at the strange sight. Then he heard heaven’s voice once more.
“Oh, you poor child. You gave my gift to someone else, did you not”
“Yes. Being hungry is very tiring”
“What you did was wonderful. But this time you were wrong. And not only that, you planted the fruit of wisdom instead of eating it”
“I am sorry”

“The fruit of wisdom is a creation of the gods. However hard humans try to copy it, it will never truly come into being. Come what may, I will not speak with you again. This ought to be a matter for punishment, but in view of your honesty I will let it pass. The books of wisdom born from that tree, I entrust to you”
After that, the boy never heard heaven’s voice again.
For the second time the boy bowed low towards the sun, and then he took the seven books into his keeping.
As he turned the pages one by one, an enormous amount of knowledge was imprinted deep in his mind.
One book, two books, three books, then four…
He read at such a terrifying speed that no eye beside him could follow, and in thirty minutes he had read all seven books.
He was originally meant to make that knowledge his own flesh and blood by eating the fruit of wisdom; taking in that vast knowledge in the form of books instead, he aged in an instant.
He no longer looked like a boy of twelve but had become a grey-haired man past fifty.
Yet he did not weep or lament at all.
With this knowledge everyone would surely become happy; first he would build a water channel to the village, improve the farming tools and teach everyone how to make fertiliser.
Seven years later, the boy’s life came to an end.
The world around him had changed for the better, and civilisation continued to advance.
His name would be handed down in the history books forever. A happy ending, a happy ending.
