『雪子ゆきこ、愛してるよ』

多くの科学者とスタッフで溢あふれる管制室で、一人の女性が相互通信のモニターに向かって、右手を持ち上げ、薬指に嵌はめた真新しい指輪を見せる。

In a control room full of scientists and staff, a woman raised her right hand, a brand-new ring on her ring finger, towards the communication screen.

すると、モニター越しに映る宇宙服を着た男性も、わざわざ分厚い手袋を外して、指に嵌めた同じ形の指輪をモニターに映した。

『ありがとう。君の開発した宇宙船に乗れるなんて僕は本当に幸せだ。この宇宙船のワープ機能を使えば、他のどの国より早く八光年先のプシュケ星系第9惑星に辿たどり着く。君が僕を推薦すいせんしてくれたお陰で、誰より早くあの星の陸地を踏むことも出来る。君にリアルタイムの映像を見せられない事だけが本当に残念だ』

打ち上げのカウントダウンが始まる。

モニター越しの亮次が手袋をはめ直して手を振った。

『５年でテラフォーミングを完成させて、必ず人の住める惑星にする。それまで待っていてくれ』

「ええ。待ってる。実際に待つのは貴方の方になるから、言い方が正しくないかな」

『何年でも待つさ。どれだけ離れていても、どれだけ時が経っても、君への気持ちは変わらない』

「私も」

The launch countdown began.

On the screen, Ryoji put his glove back on and waved.

– I will finish the terraforming and I will definitely make it a habitable planet within five years. Wait for me until then.

– I will. I will wait. But you have it the wrong way round; in reality you are the one who will be waiting.

– I will wait however many years it takes. However far apart we are and however much time passes, my feelings for you will not change.

– Nor will mine.

カウントダウンを経て、宇宙船が飛び立つ。

空を駆け上り、雲を抜けて、成層圏せいそうけんを抜けて宇宙へ。

打ち上げは成功だ。

The countdown ended and the spaceship was launched.

The ship shot into the sky, through the clouds, through the stratosphere and on into space.

『これから、ワープを開始する。成功すれば、次の通信は３年と１１ヶ月。期待していてくれ』

管制室の皆が固唾かたずを呑のんで見守る中、宇宙船は加速、みるみる細い糸のように捻ねじれて見えなくなった。

オペレーターが静かに「通信、途切れました。ワープ機能の正常起動を確認」と告げると、一瞬の静寂の後に大きな歓声が巻き起こった。

「第一関門突破ですね、曾根崎主任そねざき しゅにん！」

一人の若手研究員が雪子に駆け寄り祝福の言葉をかけると、続々と他の研究仲間達も集まってきた。

「皆、気が早い」

As everyone in the control room watched with bated breath, the spaceship accelerated, soon twisted into a thin thread and vanished.

Communication lost. Warp function confirmed as activated normally. – the operator announced quietly, and after a second of silence the cheers broke out.

– We have broken through the first stage, Chief Sonezaki!

A young researcher ran over to Yukiko to congratulate her, and her colleagues gathered round her one after another.

– You are all celebrating too soon.

そう言いながら、雪子は指輪を即座に引き抜いた。

皆がギョッとする中、彼女は平然と言い放つ。

「ワープが本当に成功したかどうか、分かるのは４年先。それまで、生きてるかどうかも分からない男のことなんて気にし続けられる？」

「しかし……」

With that, Yukiko immediately pulled off the ring.

While everyone stared in astonishment, she spoke quite calmly.

– It will be four more years before we know whether the warp really succeeded. Until then, am I supposed to keep worrying about a man who may or may not be alive?

「もし彼が生きていてテラフォーミングに成功しても、次に会えるのは１２年先。何歳なのって話」

「待ってる彼が可哀想じゃないですか」

主に男性陣から声が挙がる。

「私が居なくても、成功すれば彼の名前は一生人類史いっしょう じんるいしに残り続ける。それで充分でしょ」

そうして彼女はポケットに指輪をしまい、かと思えば別の指輪を取り出して指に嵌めた。

「次は1ヶ月後の亜空間航行型あくうかんこうこうがたの打ち上げ。皆、気を引き締めて行きましょう！」
