Reading comprehension:
Here is a magazine called “Get-together”. In the early 1980s, its cover photo showed a big table at the centre, with the father reading a newspaper, the mother absorbed in the household accounts book and the children doing their homework, a scene painting a picture of “a family gathered together”. Inside, there was an article about “a big table in the living room”. With a big table there is a place for the family to gather, “and naturally conversations increase, family members understand each other, and accordingly family bonds grow stronger”, ” big tables are all the rage right now and selling very well, so you should put one in your home too”. That is how exaggeratedly they advertised the big table.
What is more, a scene like the one on this magazine’s cover could once be seen in any family. It was an ordinary scene. Just before this magazine came out, it was unthinkable in general for every family to have a big, low table, or for each family member to have their own room, etc…. Daily life took place in just 2 or 3 rooms serving many functions, such as living room, dining room and bedroom, etc…There, at that time, stood a small table called a chabudai. It was also a desk and a table for guests, and after meals it was the place where the whole family gathered. In the cold winter, a kotatsu table with a heater appeared in place of that small table, and despite the cold outside, in that warm, gentle heat, people gathering around it created a feeling of warmth and peace. This small table and this small kotatsu served as a place for the family to gather and created a close bond between family members; that was the scene reproduced in the magazine’s cover photo.
After the war, along with rapid economic growth and life becoming more comfortable, Western ways of thinking and living were widely adopted. At the same time, believing that Japan, compared with Western society, lacked individual independence, parents gave their children their own rooms from an early age and thought it very necessary to quickly get them into the habit of doing everything on their own. So, for their children’s education, parents made sacrifices to give them at least a room of their own. As a result, those “independent” children did not want to leave their rooms.
Apart from mealtimes, the children stay in the rooms they were given, spending their time absorbed in computer games and chatting with friends on mobile phones. Conversation naturally becomes extremely rare, and the family falls apart. The consequences are “domestic violence” and “a breakdown between parents and children”. Moreover, it is thought that one of the causes of rising youth crime is family life losing communication between parents and children.

The article, written more than two decades ago, not only introduced the big table as a symbol of family happiness, but also, through the disappearance of the chabudai and the kotatsu from homes, seems to send a message about the need to recover something important that was lost along with them.
