Kawakami Ryōen is a young Buddhist monk. He was born in a town looking out on Mount Fuji and grew up surrounded by green nature. Ryōen, who loved nothing more than walking in the mountains and photographing plants and animals, thought until he finished high school that he wanted to become a natural science teacher at his old school. However, because his family had had its own temple since his grandfather’s day, and his father strongly encouraged him, for these reasons he entered a Buddhist university.
From his own bitter experiences, Kawakami Ryōen’s father often said: “Do not start wars. Whatever happens, you must keep the peace”. And whenever he went somewhere new, he talked about what he had been through during the war and about the importance of peace, treating this as his work. Seeing his father like this, Ryōen thought that with his weak character there was no way he could do the same kind of work as his father; he could probably only do something connected with nature, which he loved.
Then came spring, when he graduated from university. At a photo exhibition, Ryōen came across a satellite photo with a caption. That encounter with a short piece of writing changed Ryōen’s life.
