Grammar:
II-使い ましょう (Let’s use it: practising the grammar)
1)~と言う: called, known as, to say that
*と言う: has 2 functions
a) Used to explain or define the noun that follows it
“雪ぐに” と 言う 小説 を 読みました.
I have read the novel called ” Snow Country”.
彼 が 日本 へ 行く と 言う 話 は ほんとう ですか?
Is it true that he is going to Japan?
Note:
The nouns following と言う are usually:
+ こと ( matter, thing)
+ Nouns of communication such as :話( story),知らせ( notice),手紙( letter),うわさ(rumour)
+ Nouns of human emotion such as: かなしみ( sadness),きもち( feeling),おそれ(fear), よろこび(joy)
b) At the end of a sentence as the main verb meaning “to say that”
可愛い 女 の 子 を みた とき,”人形 の よう だ ” と いいました.
When they see a cute little girl, people say she “looks just like a doll”.
学生 は 吉田 先生 の 教え方 が 非常に(ひじょうに) 上手 だ と いいます.
The students say Mr Yoshida’s teaching is excellent.
2)たとえ ~ ても :even if
* Formation
– Verb in the “te” form + mo
– i-adjective drop i + ku + temo
– Nouns and na-adjectives + demo
たとえ タクシー で いっても,間に合う と 思いません.
Even if we take a taxi, I do not think we will make it in time.
たとえ ぼく が トム でも,同じ こと を した だろ.
Even if I were Tom, I would do the same.
たとえ 寒く ても,出かける ように します.
Even if it is cold, I will make myself go out.

この 仕事 は 子供 でも できる ほど かんたん だ.
This job is so easy that even a child can do it.
ぼく は 西田 さん が それ ほど ピアノ が ひける と 思えません
I cannot believe Mr Nishida can play the piano (so well) to that extent.

私 の 母 ほど やさしい 人 は ない.

恋人 に ふられる ほど,さびしい こと は ない.
Nothing is as sad as being dumped by the person you love
Reading comprehension:
忙しくて忙しくて、だれでもいいから一人でも多くの人に手伝ってもらいたい。そんなとき、日本語では「猫の手も借りたいほどだ」とたとえて言います。たとえ猫が手伝ってくれてもそれほど役に立つとは思えませんが、何か口に出して言いたいと思って、こう言うのです。
When you are so busy that you want help from even one more person, Japanese has a figure of speech: “I would even borrow a cat’s paw”. Even if a cat did help, I do not think it would be much use; people just say it to get their meaning across.
また、「私の家には庭があります。でも、狭いですよ」と言いたければ、これも「猫」を使って、「猫の額ほどの庭があります」と言います。猫にも額の広い猫と狭い猫がいると思うので、日本語の分かる猫に聞かれたら、「失礼じゃないですか」と怒られてしまいそうです。
Also, if you want to say “My house has a garden. But it is very small.”, there is an expression using “cat”: “a garden the size of a cat’s forehead”. I think some cats have wide foreheads and some have narrow ones, so if a cat that understood Japanese heard this, it would probably get angry and say “How rude.”
まだまだたくさん「猫」のお世話になる便利な言い方はあるのですが、「猫に小判」という言い方ほど面白いものはないでしょう。小判は昔のお金ですから、今なら「猫に一万円」と言えば、意味が分かるでしょうか。高い辞書を持っていても、全然使わずに本棚に並べておくだけの人に、「猫に小判だね」と言うのです。
There are many other handy expressions that borrow the image of a cat, but perhaps none is as interesting as “giving gold coins to a cat” (throwing money away). Gold coins are old money; if you said “giving 10,000 yen to a cat” today, would people understand? People who own an expensive dictionary but never use it and just keep it on the bookshelf are said to be “giving gold coins to a cat”.
猫だけではなく、犬、牛、馬など、人と昔から生活をしてきた動物たちを使った言い方がたくさんあります。皆さんの国の言葉にも「猫の手」や「猫の額」、そして、「猫に小判」などと同じような言い方がありますか。あれば是非それを紹介してください。
Besides cats, there are many expressions borrowing the image of animals that have lived alongside people since long ago, such as dogs, cattle and horses… In your language, are there similar expressions to “a cat’s paw”, “a cat’s forehead” or “gold coins to a cat”? If so, please share them.
