READING PRACTICE
DO NOT HURT YOURSELF. ⇆
《 From 嫌われる勇気 ⇆ THE COURAGE TO BE DISLIKED by the philosopher Ichiro Kishimi, co-written with Fumitake Koga 》

ROUGH TRANSLATION.
Do not hurt yourself
“People who are easily hurt by words” and “people who are deeply hurt by words” have something in common.
It is the habit of going over those words again and again.
“Every time you recall them, the memory is carved deeper.”
Little by little, even if you want to forget, you cannot.
Meanwhile a bad feeling sets in, and it grows deeper and deeper.
Is that not exactly like hurting yourself?
“People who do not know how to take care of themselves are called ‘fools’.”
It is only natural that “a fool” cannot be happy.
“So if you notice it is a bad habit, drop it at once.”
“I cannot stop” is just an excuse.
“Whether or not you remember hurtful words is up to you.”
You are the only one who can solve “your own problem”, so take responsibility and deal with it yourself.
Even if you hear hurtful words, if you do not dwell on them for the next 24 hours, you generally will not be bothered by them any more.
The point is not to force yourself to forget, but to try to think about other things.
As mentioned before, the human brain can only think about one thing at a time.
It is built so that if you consciously try to recall pleasant things, you cannot recall unpleasant things at the same time.
If you live earnestly in the present moment, you will not need to listen to meaningless words.
In that case you do not have to try to forget, because you shut out the hurtful words from the start.
My advice is to have “a sense of community”. When you have time to feel hurt, spend it doing something useful instead, such as something you can do to help your community.
