Learning beginner Japanese grammar (N5+N4) – Part 6

134.V1てから、V2

A pattern that sets out the order of actions in time clearly. Unlike the 「Vて」 form in part 5, 「てから」 stresses that the second action (V2) is carried out only after the first (V1) has finished.

○もっと やすくなってから、みかんを かいます。 Once they get cheaper I'll buy mandarins.

(×もっと やすくなって、みかんを かいます。)

父は いつも おふろに 入ってから、ねます。 My father always has a bath before going to bed

マナさんは 日本ごを べんきょうしてから、日本へ 来ました。 Mana studied Japanese and only then came to Japan

135.V1dic.前に、V2

A pattern expressing that before 「V1」 is done, 「V2」 has already been done. 「前(まえ)」 expresses a before-and-after relationship in time. 「V1」 is the dictionary (plain) form. Sometimes a verbal noun 「VN」 such as 「りょこう」 (travel) or 「しょくじ」 (eating)… is used in place of 「V1」. In that case the particle 「の」 must stand between them.

父は いつも ねる前に、おふろに 入ります。 Before going to bed my father always gets into the bath

マナさんは 日本へ 来る前に、日本ごを べんきょうしました。 Before coming to Japan, Mana studied Japanese

マナさんは りょこうの 前に、とけいを かいました。 Before going travelling, Mana bought a watch

しょくじの 前に、手を あらって ください。 Please wash your hands before eating

136.もって行きます

The form joining a verb of movement (to go, to come, to return…) with the verb 「もつ」 (to carry, to take…)

わたしは りょこうの 時、地図を もって 行きます。 When I travel I take a map with me

わたしは 日本へ かぞくの しゃしんを もって 来ました。 I brought a photograph of my family with me to Japan

わたしは 国へ 日本の にんぎょうを もって かえります。 I am taking a Japanese doll home with me

137.A(い)ーさ

With an 「い」 adjective (Aい), dropping 「い」 and replacing it with 「さ」 makes a noun expressing the degree of something. This is a noun formed from an i adjective expressing the degree of a thing.

For instance 「ながい」 (long) → ながい + さ → ながさ (length)

ふじさんの 高さは 3776メートルです。 Mount Fuji has a height of 3776 metres

てがみの 重さを 計ります。 To weigh a letter

138.N1にN2をV N1 に N2 を V(おく、いれる、のせるなど)

The particle 「に」 here marks the position or destination of 「N2」 and usually goes with verbs such as 「おく」 (to put, to place),「いれる」 (to put in),「のせる」 (to load, to carry…),「かける」 (to carry, to hang, to attach…),「かく」 (to write) and so on…

わたしは つくえの 上に さいふを おきました。 I put my wallet on the desk

母は れいぞうこに 卵を 入れました。 My mother put the eggs in the fridge

カードに 名前を 書いて ください。 Please write your name on the card

139.N1からN2をV N1 から N2 を V(だす、とる)

The particle 「から」 marks the starting point when 「N2」 is moved. Often used with the verbs 「出す」 (to take out, to bring out…) and 「取る」 (to take…)

わたしは あの はこから カードを だしました。 I took the card out of that box

その たなから テープを とって ください。 Please take the tape from that cupboard

140.V1たあとで、V2ます/ました

It expresses that after 「V1」 finishes, 「V2」 is done. The tense is set on the last verb in the sentence. 「V1たあとで、V2」 is close in meaning to 「V1てから、V2」. Broadly, 「Vてから」 expresses actions in an unbroken sequence, while 「Vた あとで」 need not.

たの かたちの つくりかた

The verb is formed as follows:

Change the 「V て/で」 form into the 「Vた/だ.」 form

日本では あさ 「おはようございます。」と あいさつを します。 In the morning Japanese people greet each other with “Ohayoo gozaimasu.”

144.V/A(い)/A(な)/N(PlainForm)と言いました

Unlike the previous section, where the quoted part before the particle 「と」 stays in the 「です/ます」 (polite) form, here it changes to the short form (also called the plain form). This is an indirect quotation, so the quoted part is not put in brackets.
