Learning beginner Japanese grammar (N5+N4) – Part 3

91. A(な)-で、A(な)-なN Aな–で、Aな–な N

When 「Aな」 adjectives are joined together to modify 「N」, the way they join the noun does not change. That is, they still join each other through the particle 「で」 and still join 「N」 through 「な」.

ここは しずかで、きれいな こうえんです。 This is a quiet, clean and beautiful park

92. だれがVましたか [ だれ/なに ]が Vましたか → Nが Vました

How to ask who did something, and how to answer. Here the question word is the subject and stands at the start of the sentence, so it must be followed by the particle 「が」. The answer must use the same particle.

A: だれが きましたか。 Who came?

B: マナさんが きました。 Mana came.

A: なにが はじまりましたか。 What has started?

B: パーティーが はじまりました。 The party has started

93. 雨がふりました

When speaking of natural events in everyday life, the particle 「が」 is always used

雨が やみました。 The rain has stopped

かぜが ふきました。 The wind blew

94. Nはどちらですか

This pattern asks about direction (which way?). Sometimes 「どちら」 is replaced by 「どこ」 (where?). The answer is usually 「こちら」 (this way),「そちら」 (that way),「あちら」 (that way over there).

A: えきは どちらですか。 Which way is the station? / Where is it?

B: えきは あちらです。 It's that way

95. Person に Thingを あげます

The verb あげます means to give or hand over something. It expresses one person, standing as the subject, giving something to someone else.

小林さんは マリアさんに はなを あげました。 Kobayashi gave Maria flowers

96. Person に Thing をもらいます Person [に/から] Thing を もらいます

The verb 「もらいます」 means “to receive”. The one doing the receiving is myself (わたし) or some third person. To say from whom 〈人〉, you can use either the particle 「に」 or 「から」.

マリアさんは 小林さんに はなを もらいました。 Maria received flowers from Kobayashi.

マリアさんは 小林さんから はなを もらいました。 Maria received flowers from Kobayashi.

97. Personに Nを Vします

Besides verbs such as 「あげます」 and 「もらいます」, many other verbs use the pattern 「〈人〉に Nを V」. Here 「〈人〉に」 is the indirect object,「Nを」 the direct object, and 「V」 the subject's action.

マナさんは ともだちに でんわを かけました。 Mana phoned a friend.

わたしは 母に てがみを だします。 I send a letter to my mother.

わたしは 父に でんぽうを うちます。 I send a telegram to my father.

山本先生は 学生に 日本ごを おしえました。 Mr Yamamoto taught the students Japanese.

98. Person に NをVます Person [に/から] N を Vます

Some other verbs work like 「もらいます」, that is, receiving “something” from someone else, such as 「ならいます」 (to learn),「ききます」 (to hear) and so on…

マナさんは 先生に 日本ごを ならいました。 Mana learnt Japanese from the teacher

マナさんは 先生から 日本ごを ならいました。 Mana learnt Japanese from the teacher

99. 1 NとVます

Some verbs must take the particle 「と」 (together with) to express 「N」 and 「N」 joining in some action.

For instance 「ともだちに なります」 (to become friends) 「しあいを します」 (to play a match), 「せんそうを します」 (to make war), 「けっこん します」 (to marry), 「わかれます」 (to part) and so on…

わたしは マリアさんと ともだちに なりました。 Maria and I became friends.

わたしは 四月に かぞくと わかれました。 I parted from my family in April

99.  2 When speaking of how people or things differ(ちがいます)or are the same(おなじです), the particle 「と」 is used too.

(Nと ちがいます and Nと おなじです)

日本の りょうりは フィリピンの りょうりと ちがいます。 Japanese food and Philippine food are different

この しゃしんは その しゃしんと おなじです。 This photograph and that photograph are the same

100. NにVます N[に/と] Vます

The particles 「に」 and 「と」 both mark the other party here. 「に」, however, marks an action taken on your own initiative.

わたしは 先生に そうだんしました。 I talked it over with the teacher [I had something to discuss, so I went to the teacher myself]

わたしは ともだちと そうだんしました。 My friend and I talked it over together

101.わたしにNをくれます

When someone (Xさん, say) gives something to me or to my family, the verb 「くれます」 is used. Here the giver is the subject. (take care: it is easily confused with 「あげます」). 「くれます」 is also sometimes used in questions to family or friends.

Z:Xさんは Yさんに プレゼントを あげました。 X gave Y a present.

Y:Xさんは わたしに プレゼントを くれました。 X gave me a present.

Z:Xさんは あなたに プレゼントを くれましたか。 X gave you a present, didn't he?

Broadly, 「くれます」 carries the sense of being given or granted “something” by someone else, so it is normally used for yourself and those in your own “group” (family or close friends)

マナさんは わたしに じしょを くれました。 Mana gave me a dictionary

A: マナさんは あなたに なにを くれましたか。 What did Mana give you?

B: わたしに ほんを くれました。 Mana gave me a book

山田さんは いもうとに おかしを くれました。 Mr (Ms) Yamada gave my younger sister some sweets.

田中さんは わたしの クラスの マリアさんに おかしを くれました。 Mr (Ms) Tanaka gave Maria in my class some sweets.
