Learn N3 Grammar – Week 2 Day 2

Below is the most commonly used N3 grammar for anyone taking the JLPT

I. Pattern ～に関して（は）／～に関しても／~ に 関する N (~ni kanshite (wa)/~ni kanshitemo/ ~ni kansuru N)
* Meaning: about the matter of…, concerning…
* Structure: 名に関して (noun ni kanshite)/ [文]のに関して ([bun] no ni kanshite)

Examples:
1. この問題に関して、ご意見ありませんか。(＝この問題 に 関係して)
Kono mondai ni kanshite, go-iken arimasen ka? (=Kono mondai ni kankei shite)
Does anyone have an opinion concerning this issue?

II. Pattern ～について（は）／～につき／～につ い ても／～についてのN (~ni tsuite (wa)/~ni tsuki/ ~ni tsuite mo/ ~ni tsuite no N)
* Meaning: about…~
* Structure ＜名＞について (noun ni tsuite)

Examples:
1. 日本の経済について研究しています。
Nihon no keizai ni tsuite kenkyuu shite imasu.
I am researching the Japanese economy.

III. Pattern ～によると／～によれば (~ni yoru to/ ~ni yoreba)
* Meaning: according to…, based on…
* Structure: ＜名＞によると (noun ni yoru to)

Examples
1. 今朝の新聞によると、来年度二つの大学が新設されるそ う だ。
Kesa no shinbun ni yoru to, rainendo futatsu no daigaku ga shinsetsu sareru sou da.
According to this morning’s newspaper, two schools are to be built this year.

IV. Pattern ～によって/ ～により/ ～によるN/ ～によっては (~ni yotte/ ~ni yori/ ~ni yoru N/~ni yotte wa)
* Structure: ＜名＞ によって (noun ni yotte)

* Meaning:
A. Shows the agent of an action (usually with the passive)
Example: アメリカ大陸はコロンブスによって発見された。
Amerika tairiku wa Koronbusu ni yotte hakken sareta.
The Americas were discovered by Columbus.

B. Because of…. (showing a cause or reason)
Example: 不注意によって大事故が起こることもある。
Fuchuui ni yotte, daijiko ga okoru koto mo aru.
A serious accident can happen through carelessness.

C．By means of… (showing a method)
Example: 問題は話し合いによって解決したほうがいい.
Mondai wa hanashiai ni yotte kaiketsu shita hou ga ii.
Problems are best solved through discussion.

Ｄ． Depending on…
Example: 習慣は国によって違う。
Shuukan wa kuni ni yotte chigau.
Customs differ from country to country.

E. In some cases
Example: のくすりは人によっては副作用が出ることがあります。
Kono kusuri wa hito ni yotte wa fukusayou ga deru koto ga arimasu.
This medicine can cause side effects in some people.
