20 mistakes people make with Japanese honorific language
20 MISTAKES IN KEIGO

正しい敬語が使えるビジネスパーソンを目指しましょう!
1. ご苦労様です (Thank you for your hard work)
This is a phrase for subordinates, so when speaking to someone senior use 「お疲れ様です」.

2. 了解しました (Understood)
This is also used with subordinates or people of equal rank. When speaking to a superior use 「承知しました」「かしこまりました」.

3. なるほどですね (I see)
When used with a superior it should be replaced with 「おっしゃるとおりです」.

4. 部長、おられますか? (Is the section manager here?)
「おる」is the humble form of 「いる」. Adding 「られる」does not automatically make something honorific. You should say 「いらっしゃいますか?」.

5. 本日は休みをいただいております (I am taking today off)
It should be corrected to 「本日は休みを取っております」.

6. Double honorifics (二重敬語)
Conjugating a verb that is already honorific into another honorific form makes the sentence forced and excessively stiff (honorifics used twice)
Example: お召し上がりになられる/どうぞお召し上がり下さい
=> The honorific of 「食べる」is 「召し上がる」. So adding 「お~になる」on top of that means using honorifics twice. The most appropriate sentence is still 「どうぞ召し上がって下さい」.

7. ご一緒します
「ご一緒」is for relationships between equals. It should be changed to 「お供(とも)させていただきます」.

8. 大変参考(たいへんさんこう)になりました
The word「参考」 means "for reference", used when you want to add information to a decision of your own, so this phrasing is not appropriate. It needs to be changed to「大変勉強になりました」.

9. おわかりいただけたでしょうか
This carries the meaning 「わかりましたか」, and using it with a superior is extremely impolite. It should be changed to 「ご理解いただけたでしょうか」.

10. お座りください
This form is for animals, so it needs to be changed to 「お掛けください」.

11. どうしますか
This word should also be changed to 「いかがいたしますか」.

12. ご一緒に参りましょう
Don't use 「ご一緒」with someone senior. Replace it with 「お伴いたします・ご案内いたします」.

13. ○○様でございますね
「でございます」is a humble form, not an honorific one. Humble forms are for yourself, honorific forms for the other person. It should be corrected to 「○○様でいらっしゃいますね」.

14. これで結構(けっこう)でしょうか
「結構」is what the other person says in reply to you, not a word for asking a superior. It should be corrected to 「これでよろしいでしょうか」.

15. ~のほう
「~のほう」 is a word indicating direction. So it cannot be used loosely as follows:
× 私のほうで担当いたします
○ 私が担当いたします

16. ~になります
「~になります」is a structure used when talking about something changing state, not an honorific form.
× 会議の資料になります
○ 会議の資料でございます

17.(役職名)+ 様
The correct form of address is 「○○社長・社長の○○様」

18. とんでもございません
「とんでもない」is a single word, so you cannot just change the 「ない」to 「ございません」. You should say 「いえ、とんでもないです」.

19. 今お時間よろしかったでしょうか
「よろしかった」is a past-tense form and is not appropriate. It needs to be replaced with 「今お時間いただいてもよろしいですか/でしょうか」.

20. すいません
This word is not appropriate when speaking to a superior. Replace it with 「申し訳ございません」or「大変失礼いたしました」.
