Revising honorific language in Japanese – Part 3

🍑 REVISING HONORIFIC LANGUAGE (III) 🍑

We carry on with HONORIFIC LANGUAGE, this time the HUMBLE patterns.

In fact only pattern (1) here is new – and MoMo introduced that one the other day too. The patterns after it all build on and extend patterns you have already learnt.

Let's take a look.

❤️ 1) Structure:

お+group 1 or 2 V (drop ます)+します (a group 2 verb must have 2 syllables or more once ます is dropped)

❤️ 2) Some special patterns

♦️ 1.1 Offering to do something for someone:

Shall I call you a taxi?

You look rushed off your feet. Shall I lend a hand?

That looks heavy. Shall I carry one for you?

♦️ 1.2 Asking permission to do something:
V (causative form) +

May I introduce the new members

May I take this Friday off?

And that is the end of HUMBLE LANGUAGE. Not as hard going as I had feared, is it.

Writing it is not hard, in truth, but in the listening section we get in a muddle over who is asking whom to do what. So to do well in listening you must listen a great deal + practise speaking a great deal
