When to use へ and when to use に
When do you use へ and when do you use に ?!
「新宿に行く」「新宿へ行く」「映画に行く」「映画へ行く」は全部正しいのですか。
Are all the examples above correct?
—
Let's look at the following examples :
① 遠(とお)くへ / に行(い)く。
② 向(む)こうへ / に行く
③ あっちのほうへ / に行く
④ 外国(がいこく)へ / に行く。
⑤ アメリカへ / に行く。
⑥ アメリカのニューヨークへ / に行く。
⑦ ニューヨークの国連本部(こくれんほんぶ)へ / に行く。
In all 7 example sentences above we can use either へ or に。
But strictly speaking, sentences ① to ④ take へ
Sentences ⑤ and ⑥ can take either
And sentence ⑦ takes に。
The difference between ヘ and に is that ヘ marks a direction: where you are heading, or a destination that is not clearly defined.
方向(ほうこう)や方角(ほうがく)または漠然(ばくぜん)とした行(い)く先(さき)を示(しめ)す。
に, on the other hand, expresses the purpose of the destination.
Take 学校(がっこう: school)、図書館(としょかん: library)、教会(きょうかい: church): you go there to 勉強(べんきょう study)、読書(どくしょ read)、礼拝(れいはい worship)
The same holds in the examples below. ヘ may be tolerated, but when you are pointing to the purpose of the action, に fits better than へ。
買(か)い物(もの)へ / に行く。
テニスへ / に行く。
勉強へ / に行く。
ボウリングへ / に行く。
コンサートへ / に行く。
国連総会(こくれんそうかい the United Nations General Assembly)へ / に行く。
に is also used with the stem form (the masu form with masu dropped) to mark the purpose of an action.
泳(およ)ぎに行く。
遊(あそ)びに行く。
会(あ)いに帰る。

So, coming back to the first question, we can say :
「新宿に行く」「新宿へ行く」 both work: either へ or に
But in the case of 「映画に行く」「映画へ行く」
「映画に行く」 is the more accurate one !

Is it clear now ?!
This puzzled me for ages too. When I asked Japanese people they could not explain it clearly either, so I assumed it was simply habit.
But it isn't. Japanese, English, American – everyone is the same. If you don't study it, you don't know it and you can't explain it.
