Telling 「こと」 and 「の」 apart and how to use them

Part 1 of the analysis: how 「こと」 and 「の」 are used

1.名詞+の+「こと」

奨学金のことで伺いたいんですが・・
仕事のことでご相談があるんですが・・。
試験のことを話してください

It expresses matters to do with some thing or event. Because it is about matters connected with something, 「~のことで」 or 「~のことを」 can be used instead

彼のことが好き。
先生が私の作文のことをほめてくれた。

Here it is not only that you like “him” or praise “my composition”, but that you like everything to do with “him” and praise everything to do with “my composition”

2.名詞化の「こと」

「こと」 is added after a verb or adjective to turn it into a noun, “nominalisation”
Example: to say you like sport is
「私の趣味はスポーツです」

But to say you like watching films you have to say this

私の趣味はスポーツです。
–                           -↓
映画を見る→ 映画を見ること
–                          – ↓
私の趣味は映画を見ることです。

Or in the next example, suppose you know about the tsunami in Japan

私はテレビで情報を知った。

To say you know about the tsunami in Japan, since the noun is “the news”, putting in the noun with the content 「日本で津波があった」 gives this

私はテレビで日本で津波があったことを知った。

So 3 points come up here: before 「こと」 comes a verb in the plain form

【問題1】
1.漢字を覚えます+それはおもしろい
2.李さんが帰国しました+知っていますか
3.ほめられ、愛されます+子供にはそれが必要だ

→ 1.漢字を覚えることはおもしろい。
2.李さんが帰国したことを知っていますか。
3.子供には、ほめられ、愛されることが必要だ。
In many cases 「こと」 can be replaced by 「の」, but in many others it cannot

3.How to tell 「こと」 and 「の」 apart

Analysing how 「こと」 and 「の」 are used
「こと」と「の」の使い分けを説明する前に、まず【問題2】に挑戦してみてください。
Here are a few examples; do try them

From the examples above we can see that
* both 「こと」 and 「の」 work in examples (1,2)
* only 「こと」 works in examples (3,4,5,6)
* only 「の」 works in examples (7,8)

1.Where both 「こと」 and 「の」 work

Apart from the cases where only one of the two works, using them interchangeably is basically fine. And の is usually easier to use in speech.

2.Where only 「こと」 works
There are 2 broad cases

A.Before the forms 「です・だ・である」 you cannot use nominalisation with 「の」
Before 「です・だ・である」 the structure is 「動詞/文+こと」
If you use 「の」 it turns into a sentence expressing the speaker's feeling 「のだ/んだ」

林:仕事は何ですか。
森:あなたのお手伝いをすることですよ。(名詞化の「こと」)
あなたのお手伝いをするの/んですよ。( the speaker's feeling, の「のだ」)

B.Set patterns in fixed forms

1)「~ことにする」 the speaker decides to do something

「~ことにしている」 a habit
These patterns are settled in fixed forms, so 「の」 cannot replace こと

Example:
仕事をやめる(こと/の)にした。(A decision, a resolve)
日記をつける(こと/の)にしている(a habit)

2)「~ことになる」 a result, or something decided by someone, by a group or by some rule

Example:
来週出張する(こと/の)になった。(A result, a decision)
たばこを吸うと、退学させられる(こと/の)になっている。(A rule, a regulation)

3)「~ことがある」 experience, to have done …

Example:
富士山に登った(こと/の)がある。(経験)
自分で料理を作る(こと/の)がある(機会)

4)「~ことはない」 experience, opportunity; the negative of 「~ことがある」
And one further sense: there is no need to …

Example:
わざわざ行く(こと/の)はない。メールか電話をすればいいよ。

5)「必要だ」「大切だ」 important, necessary

Example:
人間は趣味を持つ(こと/の)が必要だ/大切だ。

6)「決める」「約束する」 to decide, to promise

Example:
大学院を受ける/受けない(こと/の)に決めた。
二度と遅刻しない(こと/の)を約束します。

3. Where only 「の」 works
A.When what comes before is a verb of perception or sensation such as 「見る・見える」「聞く・聞こえる」「感じる」

Example:
車が近づいてくる(こと/の)が聞こえる。
彼が私に気を使っている(こと/の)を感じる。

B.Before 「止(と)める」「手伝う」「待つ」

Example :
私は、彼が仕事をやめようとしている(こと/の)を止(と)めた。
母が料理を作る(こと/の)を手伝う。。
彼からメールが来る(こと/の)を待っている。
These verbs are verbs of state, so they are not used to point to a thing or an event
