Telling 預かる and 預ける apart
預かる・預ける are a very easily confused pair of verbs. Today let's try telling the two apart
Take as an example that we are a customer depositing money at a bank.
The subject of 「預かる」 is the bank 【銀行】; the subject of 「預ける」 is the customer 【客】
🟠(銀行はお客さんの)お金を預かる
The bank holds the customer's money
🟠(お客さんは銀行に)お金を預ける
The customer deposits money at the bank
Still hard to remember?
Then remember this:
The customer is not a fish (the か in 預かる, which is “cá”, fish in Vietnamese). That is, with the customer as subject we do not use 預かる but 預ける.
The bank needs no scheme (the け in 預ける, which is “kế”, scheme in Vietnamese) to get customers to deposit money. That is, with the bank as subject we do not use 預ける but 預かる.
So put yourself in the customer's place or the bank's place to pick the right verb. If you are taking money in to deposit, say you want to deposit it, 預ける; if you see a customer coming in to deposit money, use 預かる.
Now something a little harder
If that were all, it would be simple; but once 「〜てあげる」「〜てもらう」「〜てくれる」 come into it, you may well find your head spinning. Look at the examples below to see the difference when the two verbs above go with those three.
🟠今日は仕事が忙しかったので、母に子供を預けた
I'm busy today, so I'm leaving my child at my mother's
🟠今日は仕事が忙しかったので、母に子供を預かってもらった
I'm busy today, so I've asked my mother to look after my child
🟠今日は仕事が忙しかったので、母が子供を預かってくれた
I'm busy today, so my mother is looking after my child for me
🟠今日は仕事が忙しかったので、母が「子供を預かってあげるよ」と言ってくれた
I'm busy today, so my mother said to me: “I'll look after my grandchild today”
(Note that there are 2 verbs here, あげる and くれる, in the sentence, which makes it a little more complicated)
A little harder still
Combined with 「〜てもらえませんか/〜ていただけませんか」「〜てくれませんか/〜てくださいませんか」 we get the honorific forms, often heard in hotels and restaurants when a customer leaves luggage or clothing with you and you take it in for them.
🟠(ホテルで)すみません、荷物を預かってもらえませんか/ていただけませんか?(話し手→客)
(At a hotel, speaker: the guest): Excuse me, could I ask you to look after my luggage?
🟠(ホテルで)すみません、荷物を預かってくれませんか/てくださいませんか?(話し手→客)
(At a hotel, speaker: the guest): Excuse me, could you look after my luggage for me?
🟠(ホテルで)すみません、チェックインまで荷物を預けてもいいですか?(話し手→客)
(At a hotel, speaker: the guest): Excuse me, may I leave my luggage here until check-in?
🟠(ホテルで)お客様、チェックインまでお荷物をお預かりいたしますよ。(話し手→ホテルの店員)
(At a hotel, speaker: the member of staff): Sir, we will look after your luggage here until check-in.
