44. ～最中
a. Structure: A (Noun + の / Verb + ている) + 最中に + B
Where:
– A can be an action or a phenomenon.
– B happens suddenly, not by anyone’s will.

b. Meaning: B happens right while A is going on

着替えをしている最中に玄関のチャイムが鳴った。
Kigae o shite iru saichū ni genkan no chaimu ga natta.
Right while I was changing my clothes, the doorbell rang.

友だちが迎えに来たとき、私はまだごはんを食べている最中だった。
Tomodachi ga mukae ni kita toki, watashi wa mada gohan o tabete iru saichūdatta.
When my friend came to pick me up, I was still in the middle of my meal.

マナーモードにしておくのを忘れたので、授業の最中に携帯電話が鳴ってしまった。
Manāmōdo ni shite oku no o wasuretanode, jugyō no saichū ni geitaidenwa ga natte shimatta.
I forgot to put it on silent, so my mobile phone rang in the middle of class.

その件については、今話し合っている最中だ。
Sono-ken ni tsuite wa, ima hanashiatte iru saichūda.
I am in the middle of discussing that matter right now.
