43. にしたがって／したがい
a. Structure: Noun / Vる (expressing change) + にしたがって

b. Meaning: as A changes, B changes too

北半球では北へ行くにしたがって気温が下がる。
Kitahankyū dewa kita e iku ni shitagatte kion ga sagaru.
In the northern hemisphere, the temperature falls as you go north.

台風が近づくにしたがい、風雨はますます強まるでしょう。
Taifū ga chikadzuku ni shitagai, fūu wa masumasu tsuyomarudeshou.
As the typhoon approaches, the wind and rain grow stronger.

携帯電話が普及するにしたがって、通話料も安くなった。
Geitaidenwa ga fukyū suru ni shitagatte, tsūwa-ryō mo yasuku natta.
As mobile phones became widespread, call charges became cheaper too.

１８歳人口の減少にしたがい、留学生の入学に熱心な大学が増えた。
18-Sai jinkō no genshō ni shitagai, ryūgakusei no nyūgaku ni nesshin’na daigaku ga fueta.
As the number of 18-year-olds falls, more universities are eager to recruit international students.

Meaning: following the instructions of ~

Depāto ga kaji ni nattaga, kyaku wa ten’in no shiji ni shitagatte hinan shi, zen’in bujidatta.
The building caught fire, but the customers evacuated as the staff instructed and all were unharmed.
