Learn Minna no Nihongo Grammar – Lesson 50
Let’s study N5-level Japanese grammar, lesson by lesson, following the Minna no Nihongo textbook.

Minna no Nihongo lesson 50 mainly covers humble language in Japanese.

Japanese humble language is 謙譲語(けんじょうご)

Humble language is a modest way of speaking used for the actions of the speaker A, or of people in A’s in-group, towards the listener B or the person being spoken about C.

For that reason, it must never be used for the actions of people outside your group, or of B or C.

1) Humble forms of verbs

おＶします

Meaning: expressing the speaker’s modesty

How it is formed: V ます お V します

Examples:

Group 1 verbs: 持ちます → お持ちします

Group 2 verbs: 調べます → お調しらべします

Group 3 verbs:

案内します   →　ご案内します
邪魔します  →　 お邪魔します

◈ Note:

☞ This pattern is used when the speaker does something for the listener or the person being spoken about, so it is not used when the speaker’s action has nothing to do with them. (this rule is the same as for the giving-and-receiving patterns in lessons 24 and 41)

(1) 私は 毎日新聞を 読みます。 （×） お読みします

(2) A：いつ おくにへ おかえりに なりますか。

B: らいしゅう かえります。 （×） おかえりします

☞ It is not used when the person spoken about belongs to your own group, even if they are senior
父を 駅まで お送りしました。（×）
父を 駅まで 送りました。（○）

☞ Do not use it with one-syllable verbs such as:来ます、 見ます、います

来ます → ✖ おきします　　 〇まいります

見ます → ✖ おみします 　　〇はいけんします

います → ✖ おいします 　〇おります

2) Humble forms of verbal nouns

ごN します

How they combine:

Verbal nouns (group 3 verbs of the form「N します」 are usually Sino-Japanese words, so they take 「ご」 and become 「ごN します」 .

(but this does not apply to verbs such as 「勉強します、 実習します、 結婚します」 )

Note: some special cases

電話します → お電話します

約束します → お約束します

3) Polite forms

Usage: used when the speaker wants to show respect to the listener.

Common polite forms:

＊ ございます

電話は 階段の 横に ございます。
The telephone is next to the stairs.

＊ ～で ございます

はい、 IMC で ございます。
Hello, IMC speaking.

…パワー電気の シュッミトですが、 ミラーさん、お願いします。
This is Summit from Power Electric; may I speak to Mr Miller.

＊ よろしいでしょうか

お飲み物は 何が よろしいでしょうか。
What would you like to drink?

コーヒーを お願いします。
Coffee, please.
