Learn Minna no Nihongo Grammar – Lesson 27
Let’s study N5-level Japanese grammar, lesson by lesson, following the Minna no Nihongo textbook.
Lesson 27: The potential form of verbs
I. How to form it and a quick look at how it is used:
– Group I: verbs with an [ i ] sound before ます。To make the potential form, just change [ i ] to [ e ].
~ ます -> 可能形(かのうけい)
およぎ ます -> およげ ます
よみます -> よめ ます
いき ます -> いけ ます
はしります -> はしれ ます
うたいます -> うたえ ます
もちます -> もてます
なおします -> なおせ ます
– Group II: drop ます and add られます
たべ ます -> たべられ ます
おぼえ ます -> おぼえられ ます
たてます -> たてられます
– Group III:
します -> できますきす
きます -> こられます
Note: once changed to the potential form, every verb behaves like a group II verb
• Meaning: expresses the ability or capacity to do something (a verb in the potential form loses its original meaning and gains the sense of “can”)
• Usage: the same as 「Vることができます」. In the sentence the particle [を] becomes [が]; other particles stay the same.
– Expressing someone’s ability to do something
漢字が読めます。
Kanji ga yomemasu.
I can read kanji.
漢字を読むことができます。
Kanji wo yomu koto ga dekimasu.
I can read kanji.
日本料理が作れます。
Nihon ryōri ga tsukuremasu.
I can cook Japanese food.
– Expressing possibility: that something can be done somewhere
銀行(ぎんこう)で お金(かね)が 換(かえ)えられます。
Ginkō de okane ga kaeraremasu.
You can change money at the bank.
ここに車がとめられます。
Koko ni kuruma ga tome raremasu.
You can park here.
II. Grammar
1. Lesson 27 is about saying whether you or someone else can do something, using the potential form above.
**Note that the particle with the potential form is always が
Examples:
-私は日本語で手紙が書けます
わたしはにほんごでてがみがかけます
I can write letters in Japanese
-私はラメンが10っぱい食べられます
わたしはらめんがじゅっぱいたべられます
I can eat 10 bowls of ramen
2. Pattern:
~~~しか Vません
Only ~~~
This pattern has the same meaning as だけ
-Examples:
+今日、私は15分しか休みません
きょう、わたしは15ふんしかやすみません
Today I only have a 15-minute break
+私は日本語しかわかりません
わたしはにほんごしかわかりません
I only understand Japanese
3. Pattern:
N は V(potential form)が、N は V(negative potential form)
*This is a contrasting pattern: you can do one thing but not the other
-Examples
+私は日本語が話せますが、英語は話せません
わたしはにほんごがはなせますが、えいごははなせません
I can speak Japanese but I cannot speak English
+野球はできますが、テニスはできません
やきゅうはできますが、てにすはできません
I can play baseball but I cannot play tennis
4.1 見えます(みえます) can be seen
*見えます means something is visible because of the circumstances, not because you choose to look. It differs from 見られます, the potential form, which depends on the speaker’s own choice.
Examples:
*With 見えます
+私は小さなものがよく見えます
わたしはちいさなものがよくみえます
I can see small things clearly
+私のうちから、山が見えます
わたしのうちから、やまがみえます
You can see the mountain from my house
*With 見られます
+私は目が見られない
わたしはめがみられない
My eyes cannot see (I am blind)
4.2 聞こえます(きこえます) can be heard
*聞こえます, like 見えます, is about sounds you hear because of the circumstances, sounds that reach your ears by themselves, such as birdsong. It differs from 聞ける (きける), which depends on the listener wanting to hear.
-examples with 聞こえます
+その声は小さいから、聞こえません
そのこえはちいさいから、きこえません
That sound was too quiet, I could not hear it
+私はさっきの音が聞こえましたが、友達は聞こえませんでした
わたしはさっきのおとがきこえましたが、ともだちはきこえませんでした
I could hear that sound just now, but my friend could not
-examples with 聞けます(きけます)
私は耳が聞けません
わたしはみみがきけません
My ears cannot hear (I am deaf)
5. Pattern: ~~~ができます
**Here できます does not mean “can”; it means something is being completed or has been completed.
Examples:
-ここに何ができますか?
ここになにができますか?
What is being built here?
-美術館ができます
びじゅつかんができます
A museum is being built here
-写真はいつですか?
しゃしんはいつですか?
When will the photos be ready?
-午後5時ぐらいできます
ごご5じぐらいできます
They will be ready around 5 in the afternoon.
-わたしは宿題ができました
しゅくだいができました
I have finished my homework
6.1 When the particle は follows other particles such as に、で、から, it emphasises the point being made.
Examples:
私の学校にはアメリカの先生がいます
わたしのがっこうにはあめりかのせんせいがいます
At my school there are American teachers too
-私の大学ではイタリア語を勉強しなければなりません
わたしのだいがくはいたりあごをべんきょうしなければなりません
At my university we even have to study Italian
-私のうちからは山が見えます
わたしのうちからはやまがみえます
From my house you can even see the mountains.
6.2 When the particle も follows other particles such as に、で、から, it means “here too …”.
Examples:
-妹の学校にもアメリカの先生がいます
いもうとのがっこうにもあめりかのせんせいがいます
At my younger brother’s school there are American teachers too
-兄の大学でもイタリア語を勉強しなければなりません
あにのだいがくでもいたりあごをべんきょうしなければなりません
At my older brother’s school they also have to study Italian
-おじいさんのうちからも山が見えます
おじいさんのうちからもやまがみえます
From my grandfather’s house you can see the mountains too.
