How to tell 「の」and 「こと」apart
In this post we learn how to use and distinguish 「の」and 「こと」 in Japanese.
This grammar is used constantly in kaiwa and appears in every JLPT exam from N3 to N1.

1. Noun +の+「こと」=> Talks about things surrounding a specific thing or matter.

Examples:
仕事のことでご相談があるんですが・・。
(I'd like to consult about a work-related matter…)

試験のことを話してください。
(Let's talk about the test)

彼のことが好き。
(I like everything about him)

先生が私の作文のことをほめてくれた。
(The teacher praised my essay)

=> Here のこと doesn't refer only to one thing or matter but also to what surrounds it. We can also add particles such as「~のことで」or「~のことを」or「~について」.

2. 「こと」=> Used to nominalise a clause

Examples:
漢字を覚えます+それはおもしろい
=> 漢字を覚えることはおもしろい。
(Memorising kanji is interesting)

アンさんが来日しました+知っていますか
=> アンさんが来日したことを知っていますか。
(Did you know An has gone to Japan?)

ほめられ、愛されます+子供にはそれが必要だ。
=> 子供には、ほめられ、愛されることが必要だ。
(For small children, praise to gain affection is necessary)
