The Dong Du beginner Japanese kanji table
The Dong Du Japanese school's 560-character beginner kanji table
Today we introduce the latest beginner kanji table from the Dong Du Japanese school. It contains 60 simple characters, 70 basic radicals and 500 kanji at beginner level (N5 N4); the table has been refined and shortened compared with before. The method is still the old one — learning by Sino-Vietnamese reading — but from my own experience and that of many Dong Du students, learning kanji this way helps students remember characters very well, because Sino-Vietnamese readings are such an important part of our own language. As you learn new words, if you pay attention you will work out the on and kun readings of each character for yourself, which is better than learning both readings from the start. This is a real advantage our way of learning kanji has over the Western approach.
