N4 honorific and humble language
Keigo comes in 3 types: 尊敬語(そんけいご): honorific language, 謙譲語(けんじょうご): humble language, and 丁寧語(ていねいご): polite language. Together these 3 types are called keigo.
Keigo is used to show politeness and respect towards the listener. It is typically used when talking to customers, superiors, older people, strangers, or in situations that call for formality.
1. Honorific language 尊敬語(そんけいご)
When speaking, remember: use honorific language when the subject is the listener (someone of higher rank) or someone from another company. Honorific language expresses respect for that person (raising them above yourself).
* For verbs with special forms, use the special form first; other verbs can use the passive form or the pattern [お + verb ます-stem (drop ます) + に なります].

***Notes on using keigo:
Japanese people distinguish between insiders “うち” and outsiders “そと”. They use keigo towards outsiders “そと” (and are always humble when talking about insiders “うち”). Family members are naturally considered “insiders”, and so are colleagues and people in the same company or organisation. For example, when talking to someone outside the company about your own company's director, even though the director is your superior, you still use humble language 謙譲語(けんじょうご) when speaking to the outsider.
Example: Mr Tanaka talks to Mr Minh about Director Yamada. (Mr Tanaka is from outside the company; Mr Minh is Mr Yamada's subordinate)
Tanaka: 山田社長(やまだしゃちょう)はいらっしゃいますか? Is Director Yamada in?
Minh: 山田(やまだ)さんはただいま外出(がいしゅつ)しております。 Yamada is out at the moment.
