N3 grammar: 〜によって
THE GRAMMAR PATTERNS BUILT ON によって
によって is grammar we learn at beginner level, but at higher levels it is used with different meanings.
Below are the grammar patterns built on によって, with how they are used and the examples I have collected.

[N3 GRAMMAR] 〜によって…/ 〜による ( due to )

Meaning: this pattern is used with two meanings:
a, It expresses the agent that brings about a result.
b, It expresses a method or a way of doing something.

How it is used:
a, With the meaning of the agent that brings about a result.
N + によって
N + による + N
The noun before によって/ による is the agent that brings about what follows. With による, the noun that follows is modified by the whole phrase “N + による” naming the agent.
Example:
(1) うちの工場では、材料不足(ざいりょうぶそく)によってたたみの生産はもうできなかった。
This factory can no longer make tatami mats because it is short of materials.

(2) 今年のインフルエンザは、今までにない型のウイルスによるものである。
This year's flu epidemic is caused by a virus never seen before.

b, With the meaning of a method or a way of doing something.
N + によって
N + による + N
The noun before によって/ による expresses the method or the basis for what follows. With による, the noun that follows is modified by the whole phrase “N + による” naming the method.
Example:
(1) 外国語を学ぶことによってその国の人たちの考え方も知ることができた。
By learning a foreign language you can also come to understand how the people of that country think.

(2) クレジットカードによるお支払いを希望される方は、次の注意をお読みください。
Anyone paying by credit card should read the note below.
