Mimi Kara Oboeru N4 Grammar: 4. ~つもり (tsumori)
Here is Japanese N4 grammar study material taken from the Mimi Kara Oboeru N4 textbook.
~つもり
This pattern is used to tell others about your own plans.
1. Structure:
Dictionary-form verb / ない-form verb + つもり
もう甘い物は食べないつもりですが、自信がありません。
Mō amai mono wa tabenai tsumoridesuga, jishin ga arimasen.
I intend to stop eating sweet things, but I am not confident.
2. Notes:
– Only used when talking about your own plans, not other people’s plans.
– Not used for things that are not up to you to decide.
私は来年大学に合格するつもりです。 — This sentence is wrong because whether you pass the university entrance exam is not up to you.
– The pattern つもりではありません does not exist; to say you do not intend to do something (=intend not to do it) we only use Vないつもり.
3. Related patterns:
Vる+つもりはない: Have no intention of doing V
Vる+つもりで: With the intention of
Vた+つもりで: As if, treating it as
つもりである: To believe, to think that
つもりだ: To have assumed that
