Mimi Kara Oboeru N4 Grammar: 19. ～かどうか (ka douka)

～かどうか

1. Meaning: Used to join two sentences, when there is no question word
森さんは今日の食事会に来ますか、来ませんか。＋（あなたはそれを）知っていますか。
=> 森さんが今日の食事会に来るかどうか、知っていますか。
I do not know whether Mr Mori is coming to today’s dinner party.

2. Structure:
Noun / [verb / い-adjective / な-adjective] plain form + かどうか…
However, with な-adjectives drop “だ”.

これは初めて作った料理です。おいしいかどうか自信がありません。
Kore wa hajimete tsukutta ryōridesu. Oishī ka dō ka jishin ga arimasen.
This is a dish I made for the first time. I am not very confident whether it is tasty.

あした、晴れるかどうか、心配です。
Ashita, hareru ka dō ka, shinpaidesu.
I am worried about whether the weather will be fine tomorrow.

このことばを前に習ったかどうか、覚えていません。
Kono kotoba o mae ni naratta ka dō ka, oboete imasen.
I cannot remember whether I have studied this word before.

これが本物のダイヤかどうか、私にはわかりません。
Kore ga honmono no daiya ka dō ka, watashiniha wakarimasen.
I do not know whether this is a real diamond.

3. Note: words with a negative or opposite meaning can be used instead of 「かどうか」

会議に出席するかしないか、なるべく早く知らせてください。
Kaigi ni shusseki suru ka shinai ka, narubeku hayaku shira sete kudasai.
Please let me know soon whether you will attend the meeting

来年子供が生まれます。まだ男の子か女の子かわかりません。
Rainen kodomo ga umaremasu. Mada otokonoko ka on’nanoko ka wakarimasen.
The baby will be born next year. We do not know yet whether it is a boy or a girl
