38. ～による／より／よって／よっては
a. Structure: Noun + による／より／よって／よっては
Note that による must be followed by a noun.

b. Meaning 1: cause, reason

森林の伐採により、世界各地で砂漠化現象が起こっている。
Shinrin no bassai ni yori, sekai kakuchi de sabaku-ka genshō ga okotte iru.
Because of deforestation, desertification is happening all over the world.

今度の台風による被害は１億円に上る。
Kondo no taifū ni yoru higai wa 1 oku-en ni noboru.
The damage from this typhoon exceeded 100 million yen.

少子化は結婚年齢が上がったことによるといわれている。
Shōshika wa kekkon nenrei ga agatta koto ni yoru to iwa rete iru.
It is said that the population is ageing because people are marrying later.

c. Meaning 2: means, method

インターネットによって瞬時に大量の情報が得られるようになった。
Intānetto ni yotte shunji ni tairyō no jōhō ga e rareru yō ni natta.
It has become possible to obtain huge amounts of information instantly through the internet.

電話によるお問い合わせはご遠慮ください。
Denwa ni yoru o toiawase wa goenryokudasai.

d. Meaning 3: based on ~

成績によってクラスを決める。
Seiseki ni yotte kurasu o kimeru.
Classes are assigned based on grades.

Mokugeki-sha no shōgen ni yori, han’nin ga taiho sa reta.

e. Meaning 4: if ~ differs, … differs too

How this product is rated differs from person to person.

f. Meaning 5: (によっては) in some cases ~ happens

「日（体調／仕事の状況）によっては、旅行に参加できないかもしれません」
