Learn Minna no Nihongo Grammar – Lesson 35
Let’s study N5-level Japanese grammar, lesson by lesson, following the Minna no Nihongo textbook.
The Japanese conditional form is 条件形(じょうけんけい)
(the third type of conditional verb form)
1. How to form it
a) Affirmative:
* Verbs:
Group 1 verbs: change the ending 「u」 to 「e」 + -ba
(from the –masu form, drop -masu and change –i to –e + ba)
| Dictionary form | Conditional form |
| 行く(いく) | いけば |
| 急ぐ(いそぐ) | いそげば |
| 頼む(たのむ) | たのめば |
| 呼ぶ(よぶ) | よべば |
| ある | あれば |
| 買う(かう) | かえば |
| 待つ(まつ) | まてば |
| 話す(はなす) | はなせば |
Group 2 verbs: drop 「ru」 + -reba
(from the –masu form, drop -masu and add –reba)
| Dictionary form | Conditional form |
| 調べる(しらべる) | しらべれば |
| 変える(かえる) | かえれば |
| 見る(みる) | みれば |
| いる | いれば |
Group 3 verbs:
| 来る(くる) | くれば |
| する | すれば |
い-adjectives: Drop い and add ければ.
| やすい | やすければ |
| ちいさい | ちいさければ |
| *いい | *よければ |
な-adjectives and nouns:
+ な-adjectives: drop な and add なら
+ Nouns: add なら
(ならば also exists, but なら is used more often)
| かんたん(な) | かんたんなら |
| しずか(な) | しずかなら |
| びょうき | びょうきなら |
| がくせい | がくせいなら |
B) The negative
* Verbs: Take the -nai form and conjugate it like an –i adjective
* い-adjectives: Change to the negative (~くない) and conjugate it like an –i adjective
* な-adjectives and nouns: Change to the negative (~ではない/~じゃない) and conjugate it like an –i adjective
2. General meaning (The meaning of the conditional form)
If…, supposing… (like ~と、~たら)
3. How it is used
3.1. Expresses a condition (an action or state in the conditional clause) leading to an action or state in the second clause (the result)
Examples:
1) この 説明書を よめば、 使い方が わかります。
If you read this manual you will understand how to use it.
2) カタログを 見なければ、 値段が わかりません。
If you do not look at the catalogue you will not know the price.
3) やすければ、この 車を 買います。
If it is cheap I will buy this car.
4) 日曜日は ひまなら、 広島へ 行きます。
If I am free on Sunday, I will go to Hiroshima.
5) 雨なら、うちで テレビを 見ます。
If it rains I will stay home and watch TV.
Note: unlike 「~と」, the second clause of this conditional can express will or desire, such as: 「~Vてください」、「Vましょう」、「Vたいです」
1) 何か 意見が あれば、 どうぞ 言ってください。
If you have any comments, please say so.
2) あの店の テレビが 安ければ、 買いましょう。
If the TVs at that shop are cheap, let us buy one
3) この洗濯機は 音が 静かなら、 買いたいです。
If this washing machine is quiet, I would like to buy it.
3.2. With 「なら」there is one more use: limiting the topic being discussed (only within what is being talked about)
Examples:
1) A: 「ワープロが ほしいんですが、どこのほうが いいですか。」
B: 「ワープロなら、東京電気が いいです。」
A: I want a word processor; which make would be good?
B: If it is a word processor, Tokyo Electric is good
(not any other electrical product, but if it is a word processor then…)
2) A: 「カメラが 買いたいんですが、どこかいい店を知っていますか。」
B: 「カメラなら、秋葉原の藤屋が いいです。」
A: I want to buy a camera; do you know a good shop?
B: If it is a camera, the Fujiya shop in Akihabara is very good.
( not any other electrical product, but if it is a camera then…)
3) A: 「あなたは フランス語が 分かりますか。」
B: 「いいえ、分かりません。英語なら、分かります。」
A: Do you understand French?
B: No, I do not. If it is English, I do understand)
( not any other language, but if it is English then…)
