Learn Minna no Nihongo Grammar – Lesson 19
Let’s study N5-level Japanese grammar, lesson by lesson, following the Minna no Nihongo textbook.

Lesson 19: The た form of verbs
1. How to make the た form: exactly like the て form. Wherever you would use て or で, use た or だ instead.
• Group I:
かいて → かいたのんで → のんだ
• Group II:
たべて → たべた
みて → みた
• Group III:
きて → きたして → した

2. V たことが ありますか。: to have done ~ before
はい。あります。
いいえ、ありません。
• Usage: talks about an experience you have had in the past. It describes something that does not happen often.
• Examples:
あなたはにほんへいったことがありますか。
Anata wa nihon e itta koto ga arimasuka.
Have you ever been to Japan?

いいえ、ありません / いいえ、一度ありません。

3. Vたり、Vたり します。sometimes… sometimes… and…
• Usage:
– Used to list a few representative actions out of many that the subject does, with no particular time order; it does not matter which happened first.
– Unlike the pattern V1て、V2 て…V ます, which lists actions in time order
– It sounds unnatural when listing everyday routine actions such as getting up, eating or going to bed…
– The tense of the pattern is shown at the end of the sentence.
