Learn Minna no Nihongo Grammar – Lesson 1
Let’s study N5-level Japanese grammar, lesson by lesson, following the Minna no Nihongo textbook.
1. N1 は N2 です
Meaning: N1 is N2
Usage:
– The noun before は is the topic or the subject of the sentence.
– です is used at the end of an affirmative sentence to show politeness towards the listener.
– Before です comes a noun or an adjective.
Note: は as a particle is read wa, not ha
Examples:
1. わたしは たなかです。
I am Tanaka.
2. わたしは 学生 がくせいです。
I am a student.
2. N1 は N2 ではありません。
Meaning: N1 is not N2
Usage:
– ではありません is the negative form of です.
– In conversation じゃありません can be used instead of ではありません
Examples:
ラオさんは エンジニアでは(じゃ)ありません。
Mr Rao is not an engineer.
Note: : では is read dewa
3. S + か
1) Yes/no questions
Usage:
– To make a question, just add か at the end of the sentence.
– The answer to this kind of question must always contain はい (yes) or いいえ (no). Leaving it out is considered impolite.
N1 は N2 です
S + か
N1 は N2 ではありません。
Examples:
1.マイさんは ベトナム人ですか。
マイさんは ベトナムじ んですか。 Is Mai Vietnamese?
…はい、ベトナム人です。
…はい、ベトナムじ んです。… Yes, she is Vietnamese.
2. ミラさんは 学生ですか。
ミラさんは がくせいですか。 Is Mira a student?
…いいえ、学生ではありません。
…いいえ、がくせいではありません。 …No, she is not a student.
2) Questions with a question word
Usage:
– The question word goes exactly where the word you are asking about would be.
– Add the particle か at the end of the question.
Examples:
あの人は だれですか。
あのひ とは だれですか。Who is that person?
…(あの人は) 山田さんです。
…(あの人は) やまださんです。…(That person) is Mr Yamada.
Note:: When speaking, raise your intonation on the particle か
4. N も
Meaning: N too
Usage: The particle も is used instead of は when the information about the topic is the same as the information about the previous topic.
Examples:
1. わたしは ベトナム人です。
わたしは ベトナムじ んです。 I am Vietnamese.
2. タンさんも ベトナム人です。
タンさんも ベトナムじ んです。 Mr Tan is Vietnamese too.
5. N1 の N2
Meaning: N2 of N1, N2 belonging to N1
Usage:
– The particle の links 2 nouns.
– N1 makes the meaning of N2 more specific.
– In this lesson, N1 is an organisation or group that N2 belongs to.
Examples:
わたしは Ha Noi大学 だいがくの学生です。
I am a student at Hanoi University.
6. ~さん
Usage:
– In Japanese, さん is placed right after the name of the listener or a third person to show respect.
– さん is never used after your own name.
Examples:
わたしは たなかです。
I am Tanaka.
あのかたは きむらさんです。
That person is Kimura.
Note:: In direct conversation, Japanese people rarely use あなた once they know the listener’s name; they use the name instead. Also, in Japan you call someone by their full name or just their family name. First names are only used with close friends or family.
7. ~さい
Usage:
– To talk about age, add さい (the counter for years of age) after the number. (See the age counter table on page 8)
– To ask someone’s age, use the question word なんさい. More politely, use おいくつ
つ.
Examples:
すずきさんは なんさい(おいくつ)ですか。 How old are you, Ms Suzuki?
…(わたしは)29 さいです。 …(I am) 29 years old
… 29 です。 ..29.~さん~さい
