Telling the 4 classic N2 patterns apart: にしたがって / につれて / にともなって / とともに
A. What they have in common:
When they mean “along with” or “the more…the more…”, the 4 patterns can in many cases replace one another.
Example:
1. 年を取るにしたがって(につれて・にともなって・とともに)、記憶力が衰(おとろ)えてきた。
The older you get, the weaker your memory becomes.
2. 仕事の経験が増すにともなって(とともに・につれて・にしたがって)、会社内での地位が上がっていった。
The more work experience you gain, the higher your position in the company.
B. How they differ:
I. Their own particular senses
1. にしたがって
+ According to…
Because the kanji in the grammar にしたがって is 従, the Tùng (Tòng) of 服従 (obedience) and 従軍 (joining the army)…, carrying the sense of “following…”, only にしたがって can be used in this case.
計画にしたがって、案件を展開した。
The project was carried out according to plan.
+ Therefore…
When したがって stands at the start of a sentence (without に), it works as a conjunction meaning “therefore”, marking a cause-and-effect relationship and leaning towards drawing a conclusion.
ここは禁煙です。したがって、たばこはここで吸ってはならない。
There is a “禁煙” sign here. Therefore you may not smoke here.
2.につれて
It carries no particular grammatical sense of its own beyond the verb forms used with verbs of movement, such as つれてくる, to bring someone along…
明日、子供を連れてきてもいい?
May I bring my child along tomorrow?
3.とともに
Because the kanji in the grammar とともに is 共, the Cộng of 共同 (joint) and 公共 (public)…, carrying the sense of “shared…”, “together…”, only とともに can be used when you want to express doing something together with someone ( as with と一緒に ).
友達と共に京都を訪れた。
To visit Kyoto with a friend.
4. にともなって
It carries the sense of “going hand in hand with…” that Vietnamese often expresses, for instance: この仕事は多くの危険を伴う。
This work goes hand in hand with a great many dangers.
II.What they share
1.How formal the register is
Broadly, these grammatical expressions become less stiff and formal as you go along the line (にともなって > とともに )>( につれて > にしたがって )
2. The relationship between the two halves of the sentence:
AにつれてB / AとともにB are used only when both change in the same direction ( A rises, B rises; A falls, B falls… ) .
にしたがって / にともなって can be used both when they change in the same direction and when they change in opposite directions ( A rises, B falls, or the other way round ).
1/ 人口が増加するにつれて(にしたがって)、食料需要も拡大している。
The larger the population grows, the greater the demand for food.
2/ 人口が増加するにしたがって(につれてX)、森林面積が減少していく。
The larger the population grows, the smaller the area of forest.
3/ 仕事の経験が増すにともなって(とともに)、会社内での地位が上がっていった。
The more work experience you gain, the higher your position in the company.
4/ 仕事の経験が増すにともなって(とともにX)、労働時間が下がっていった。
The more work experience you gain, the shorter your working hours.
3. Other points.
1/ につれて and にしたがって
The second half of a sentence with につれて does not take expressions of will; it is mostly natural changes, while
にしたがって can be used in both cases.
通勤客が増える(X につれて/にしたがって)、今後、バスの本数を増やしていこうとしている。
We plan in future to increase the number of buses as the number of passengers commuting by bus rises.
2/ にともなって and とともに
とともに is used almost entirely when the two parts happen or are carried out at the same time. にともなって carries the sense of a change that follows a little later.
大学を卒業するとともに(にともなってX)、私の青春は終わった。
My youth came to an end at the same time as I graduated from university.
