N4 Grammar Structures Expressing Purpose

In this post Nihongo Guide shares 5 N4 grammar structures expressing purpose that often appear in the exam: Vに（行きます）/ Vるため（に）/Vるのに/Vるように/Nのため（に）.

1. Vに（行きます）

Meaning: Expresses the purpose of an action: going somewhere to do something

Examples:
(1) 明日、デパートへ　靴に　行きます。
（あした、デパートへ　くつに　いきます。）
Tomorrow I'm going to the department store to buy shoes.

(2) 昼休みには　寮へ　食事に　戻ります。
（ひるやすみには　りょうへ　しょくじに　もどります。）
At lunchtime I go back to the dormitory to eat.

(3) ひろし君は　何をしに来たの。何もしないで　帰った。
（ひろしくんは　なにをしに　きたの。なにもしないで　かえった。）
What did Hiroshi come for? He went home without doing anything.

2. Vるため（に）

Meaning: In order to… / for the purpose of…

Examples:
(1) フランスの料理を　作るために、フランス語を　習います。
（フランスの　りょうりを　つくるのために、フランスごを　ならいます。）
I study French in order to cook French food.

(2) 田中さんは　サッカーの試合に　勝つのために、毎日10キロ　走っています。
（たなかさんは　サッカーのしあいの　かつのために、まいにち　10キロ　はしっています。）
To win the football match, Mr Tanaka runs 10 km every day.

(3) 国際会議に　出張のため、アメリカに　行きます。
（こくさいかいぎに　しゅっちょうのため、アメリカに　いきます。）
I'm going to America to attend an international conference.

3. Vるのに

Meaning: Purpose of use, convenient for something

Examples:
(1) このナイフは　チーズを　切るのに　便利です。
（このナイフは　チーズをきるのに　べんりです。）
This knife is very handy for cutting cheese.

(2) 電子辞書は　言葉の意味を　急いで　調べるのに　役に立ちます。
（でんしじしょは　ことばのいみを　いそいで　しらべるのに　やくにたちます。）
An electronic dictionary is very useful for quickly looking up the meaning of words.

(3) 外国旅行に　行くのには　バスポートが　必要です。
（がいこくりょこうに　いくのには　バスポートが　ひつようです。）
A passport is necessary for travelling abroad.

4. Vるように・Vないように

Meaning: So that / so as not to…

Examples:
(1) 子供にも　分かるように、易しい言葉で　話してください。
（こどもにも　わかるように、やさしい　ことばで　はなしてください。）
So that children can understand too, please use easy words.

(2) 約束の時間を　忘れないように、メモを　します。
（やくそくのじかんを　わすれないように、メモを　します。）
I write a memo so as not to forget the appointment time.

(3) 先生の声が　よく聞こえるように、前の席に　座りました。
（せんせいのこえが　よく　きこえるように、まえのせきに　すわりました。）
To hear the teacher better, I sat in a front seat.

5. Nのため（に）

Meaning: For the benefit of… / for…

Examples:
(1) これは　子供のための本です。
（これは　こどものためのほんです。）
This is a book for children.

(2) 私は　この会社のために　40年間　働きます。
（わたしは　このかいしゃのために　４０ねんかん　はたらきます。）
I have worked for this company for 40 years.

(3) お年寄りのために　もっと　大きい字で　書いてください。
（おとしよりのために　もっと　おおきいじで　かいてください。）
Please write in bigger letters for the elderly too.
