Learn Minna no Nihongo Grammar – Lesson 5
Let’s study N5-level Japanese grammar, lesson by lesson, following the Minna no Nihongo textbook.

Lesson 5:

1. N は ~月(がつ) ~日(にち)です。N is the ~th of ~.
Say the year first, then the month and finally the day.
Some common questions:
N は いつ/ 何月(なんがつ) / 何日(なんにち)ですか。 When / which month / which day is N?
• Usage: いつ (when) can replace question words with a similar meaning, such as : なんじ、なんがつ、なんにち

• Examples:
きょうは何日ですか。
Kyō wa nan nichi desuka.
What is the date today?

12日です。
Jūni nichi desu.
It is the 12th.

らいげつは何月(なんがつ)ですか。
Raigetsu wa nan gatsu desuka.
What month is next month?

12月(がつ)です。

When is your birthday?

10 月10日です。
Jū gatsu tōka desu.
The 10th of October.

2. N (a place) へ いきます/ きます/ かえります: To go/come/return to somewhere (place N)
Examples:

どこへもいきませんでした。
Doko e mo ikimasen deshita.

• Complete negation: どこ(へ)も いきません。
– Meaning: I am not going anywhere / I go nowhere)
– Usage: the particle も + the negative form of the verb: denies everything within the range covered by the question word どこ. You can use も alone or へも; へも makes the negation stronger.

Note: to say “on foot”, use あるいて instead of で.

4. だれと ~ V ますか。Who did you do it with?
N (a person) と V ます: To do something together with N

• Usage:
– the particle と identifies who takes part in the action together with you; in English “with, together with”.
– If you do something “alone”, use ひとりで without と

• Examples:
だれとこうえんへいきましたか。
Dare to kōen e ikimashitaka.
