Lesson 12: The past tense
1. Tenses of sentences ending in a noun or a な-adjective
• Present:
– Affirmative: N/ Na です。
– Negative: N/ Na じゃ（では）ありません。

• Past:
– Affirmative: N/ Na でした。
– Negative: N/ Na じゃ（では）ありませんでした。

• Examples:
昨日は雨じゃありませんでした。
Kinō wa ame ja arimasendeshita.
It did not rain yesterday.

先週、私はひまでした。
Senshū, watashi wa himadeshita.
I was free last week.

2. Tenses of sentences ending in an い-adjective
• Present:
– Affirmative: Aいです。
– Negative: A (drop い) くないです。

• Past:
– Affirmative: A (drop い) かったです。
– Negative: A (drop い) くなかったです。

• Examples:
きのうはさむかったです。
Kinō wa samukattadesu.
It was cold yesterday.

おととい、パンはおいしくなかったです。
Ototoi, pan wa oishikunakattadesu.
The day before yesterday, the bread was not nice.

3. N1はN2よりです：N1 is more ~ than N2
• Usage: A comparative sentence. N1 is compared with N2

• Examples:
このかばんは そこかば よりきれいです。
Kono kaban wa soko kaba yori kireidesu.
This bag is nicer than that one.

くるまは バイク より はやいです。Kuruma wa baiku yori hayaidesu. A car is faster than a motorbike.

4. N1 と N2 と どちらが Adj ですか。 Which is more Adj, N1 or N2?
…N1 (N2) のほうが Adj です。N1 (N2) is more ~
• Usage: the question word どちら is used to compare 2 things or people.

• Examples:
日本語と 英語と どちらが すきですか。
Nihongo to eigo to dochira ga sukidesu ka.
Which do you prefer, Japanese or English?

日本語の ほうが すきです。
Nihongo no hō ga sukidesu.
I prefer Japanese.

本と 映画と どちらが おもしろいですか。
Hon to eiga to dochira ga omoshiroidesu ka.
Which is more interesting, books or films?

どちらも おもしろいです。
Dochira mo omoshiroidesu.
Both are interesting.

5. N1 [のなか] で なに／どこ／だれ／いつ が いちばん Adj ですか。 Within N1, what/where/who/when is the most Adj?
N2 が いちばん Adj です。N2 is the most ~.

• Usage: A superlative sentence in which N2 belongs to the group N1 and has that quality most of all.

• Examples:
ベトナムで どこが いちばん きれいですか。
Betonamu de doko ga ichiban kireidesu ka.
Which place in Vietnam is the most beautiful?

ハノイが いちばん きれいです。
Hanoi ga ichiban kireidesu.
Hanoi is the most beautiful.

日本料理の中で 何がいちばん好 きですか。
Nihonryōri no naka de nani ga ichiban sukidesu ka.
Which Japanese dish do you like best?

たこやきがいちばん好 きです。
Takoyaki ga ichiban sukidesu.
I like takoyaki best.
