FIGURES OF SPEECH
忙しくて忙しくて誰からもいい一人でも多くの人に手伝ってもらいたい。そんな時、日本語では[猫のても借りたいほどだ]と例えて言います。たとえ猫が手伝ってくれてもそれほど役に立つとは思いませんが、何か口を出して言いたいと思って、こう言うのです。
When you are so busy that you want help from anyone at all, whether one person or several, Japanese has a figure of speech for such times: “I would even like to borrow a cat’s paw”. Even if a cat did help, I do not think it would be any use, but people say it because they want to complain about something.
また、「私の家には庭があります。でも狭いですよ。]と言いたければ、これも猫を使って、「猫の額ほどの庭があります]と言います。猫にも額の広い猫と狭い猫がいると思うので、日本語が分かる猫に聞かれたら、[失礼じゃないですか]と怒られてしまいそうです。
Also, if you want to say:”My house has a garden. But it is tiny”, this too uses the image of a cat:” I have a garden the size of a cat’s forehead”. I think even among cats there are cats with wide foreheads and cats with narrow ones, so if a cat that understood Japanese heard it, it would probably get angry:”Isn’t that terribly rude?”
まだまだたくさん「猫]のお世話になる便利な言い方はあるのですが、[猫に小判]と言う言い方ほど面白いものはないでしょうか。高い辞書を持っていても、全然使わずに本棚に並べて置くだけの人に、[猫に小判だね]と言うのです。
There are many other handy expressions using the image of a cat, but isn’t the expression:” giving old gold coins to a cat” a really interesting one? Old gold coins are money from long ago, so if you said now:” giving ten thousand yen to a cat”, I wonder if people would understand what it means? To someone who has a very expensive dictionary but never uses it and just leaves it on the bookshelf, people will say:” You are giving money to a cat”
猫ではなく、犬、牛、馬など、人と昔から生活してきた動物たちを使った言い方がたくさんあります。皆さんの国の言葉も「猫の手],「猫の額]、そして「猫に小判]などと同じような言い方がありますか。あれば是非それを紹介してください。
Not only cats: there are many expressions using animals that have lived alongside people since ancient times, such as dogs, cows and horses. In your country, are there sayings like [a cat’s paw], [a cat’s forehead] or [giving gold coins to a cat] and so on…? If so, please be sure to share them!
